Tasmanian Exports

Tasmania’s export sector is critical to our State’s economic future and growth, with exports of goods and services in 2022-23 estimated at $5.89 billion – or contributing approximately 15 per cent of Gross State Product. Of this, the nominal value of Tasmania’s goods exports was valued at $5.09 billion. Key international destinations were China, the United States, South Korea, Japan, Taiwan, Indonesia, Thailand, Malaysia, and Vietnam.

Key export commodities include:

  • processed metals and metal products
  • ores and concentrates
  • education
  • seafood products
  • meat products
  • tourism
  • dairy products.

In 2022–23, services exports contributed $792 million to Tasmania’s goods and services total, a 56.2 per cent growth over the pandemic-affected 2021-22 financial year.

Tasmania's trade interests are currently supported by a number of free trade agreements to which the Australian Government is a signatory. These agreements cover around 90 per cent of Tasmania’s goods exports by value, including agreements with China, Japan, Thailand, Hong Kong, Singapore, the United States, Malaysia, Korea, Indonesia, India and the United Kingdom. Multi-lateral agreements such as the ASEAN-Australia-New Zealand FTA, the Comprehensive and Progressive Agreement for the Trans-Pacific Partnership and the Regional Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement also provide significant market access opportunities for Tasmanian exporters

Export Statistics

Each year, the Department  compiles Tasmanian export data by product and market. These statistics are generated from the monthly subscription data provided by the Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS); the data provided on this page is derived entirely from this source.

The ABS estimates that in the year to June 2023 (i.e. 2022-23 data), the nominal value of Tasmania’s overseas merchandise exports was $4.40 billion (Source: ABS Cat. No 5368.0).

Please note that the total value of Tasmania's international exports of goods varies between ABS's monthly 5368.0 and annual 5220.0 releases. A key discrepancy in these two measurements arises from ABS not disclosing export values of some of the confidential items in the monthly 5368.0 releases while adding those values back to the annual aggregate figure reported in 5220.0.

Notes:

  • Exports by Market includes all markets with which goods were exported and recorded with a customs value. If further information is required on the product breakdown of markets not included in this document, please contact trade@building.tas.gov.au for assistance.

Confidential items of trade are commodities that, if disaggregated, may result in the data being identified by individual exporters or export items of which the exporter has requested their values to be kept confidential. As such, commodities within this category may actually belong to those other categories and values listed above. Other items relating to defence or matters of national security may be excluded entirely from these values.

Trade Scorecard

The Scorecard is a check of progress against the goals of the Tasmanian Trade Strategy 2019-2025.

This is the second publication of the Tasmanian Trade Scorecard, covering the 2023-24 financial year.

The Trade Scorecard will not replace the current release of export statistics published on this website. However, its purpose is to provide progress against the key performance indicators outlined within the Strategy. It will also explain more of the discrete export trade nuances affecting the Tasmanian economy and how the Tasmanian export task fits into the larger national and global trade environment.
