Unlocking Dowsing Point - more homes for Tasmania

On 17 May 2026, the Tasmanian and Australian governments announced a commitment to work together to redevelop and transform land at Dowsing Point, delivering new housing, open space and community infrastructure.

The 31-hectare site, currently occupied by Derwent Barracks, has been identified for divestment as part of the Australian Government’s response to the independent Defence Estate Audit.

The Dowsing Point divestment presents an exciting opportunity to increase housing supply in Greater Hobart. The site has the potential to support up to 1,000 new homes, providing a mix of housing options to help meet the needs of Tasmania’s growing and changing community.

The redevelopment aims to create a vibrant, liveable and well-connected neighbourhood that integrates housing, open space and community infrastructure. Located close to transport links, employment centres, services and recreational facilities, the site is well positioned to support future growth and deliver lasting benefits for the community.

Building Tasmania has now established a project team to lead the project on behalf of the Tasmanian Government and is working with the Australian Government and key stakeholders to plan for the future redevelopment of this strategically located site.
