Fujian Province and Tasmania

Tasmania’s sister state relationship with the Fujian Province in China was established in March 1981, acknowledging the great potential between Tasmania and Fujian for cultural and economic engagement. More than four decades on, the range of projects, activities and people connecting our regions clearly demonstrate this potential has been realised. We are close partners with shared interests spanning trade, agriculture, forestry, aquaculture, education, culture and tourism.

This relationship was strengthened even further in late 2014, with the visit of President Xi Jinping to Hobart, fulfilling the commitment he made to visit Tasmania while he was Governor of Fujian Province from 1999 to 2002.

The 40th Anniversary

In March 2021, we celebrated the 40th anniversary of the Tasmania-Fujian sister state relationship with a year-long program of activities reflecting the importance of this relationship.

Supporting this milestone and working with our Fujian partners, the Department of State Growth has recorded highlights of these celebrations in a journal, Celebrating Forty Years of the Tasmania and Fujian Sister State Relationship. It features the joint concert performed by our respective orchestras, local activities and the pinnacle State Reception at Government House. Through this record, you will see that Tasmanians and Fujianese people apply a resourcefulness and creativity to their business and artistic endeavours, which continue to deliver benefits through this partnership.

You can also watch recorded messages from 2021 made by the then Premier of Tasmania and Governor of Fujian Province, available below.

Tasmania’s engagement with Fujian was also a focus of the Premier-led trade an investment mission to China in early November 2024.
